On our last day in Lhasa, we hooked up with a small group and went horseback riding in the Drechen Valley, about an hour's drive outside Lhasa. It turned out to be a great day to ride – not too hot and not rainy. Tibetan ponies are smaller than their European and Middle Eastern counterparts, but no less stubborn. This was Greg’s first experience on a horse, so it was fun watching him bumping along – until we discovered he was allergic! I think I had a better time than he did.

The Drechen Valley is dotted with small villages, streams and farm fields. We enjoyed close encounters with Yak, sheep, goats, cows and other horses along the narrow, rocky paths of the valley floor. Prayer flags waved from hilltops and distant peaks, and we rode past ancient forts, built hundreds of years ago by the once-independent Tibetan army.
